Generally upgrades increase an items main stats and provide extra benefits, based on the item type. Examples include Whistan's shield, for FB Sorcs, and Goldwraps for caster builds.
Armour
Link's armor is a key element to protect him from danger. While it can't be upgraded like weapons, it can still be improved in a variety of ways to improve its defence capabilities.
Armour is designed to protect animals or people from injury or harm regardless of whether it's a direct physical attack or a range of hazards posed by the environment or activities. Historically, the majority of armour was made from leather or fabric, but metal protections were also utilized, especially for military applications such as heavy cavalry and combat drones.
There are a variety of ways to upgrade armour however, the majority require you to visit one of four Great Fairy Fountains scattered throughout Hyrule. Each fountain offers a different degree of improvement, with higher levels of protection requiring more rupees and materials.
First, Armor Upgrades are permanent upgrades. Once they've been put in place they aren't able to be removed unless you own another piece of equipment that has the same upgrade. It is crucial to only apply the most effective level of upgrades to your gear and that you have the required materials to complete the process.
When it comes to acquiring the required upgrade components to upgrade your character, they are available in a variety of places around Hyrule, including shrines, shops as well as enemies. They're usually identified with the blue triangle or gold circle symbol and are available in large quantities as you progress. They may appear randomly but there is a possibility that getting certain upgrades will trigger a quest which will reward you with even more.
It's important to note that, although the level that upgrades offer may differ, it will always be greater than nothing. A full set of upgraded armor will give you a powerful defense boost that can protect you from any kind of attack including magic. This makes it a formidable weapon for all classes.
Weapons
If you're looking to make your guns unique, you can upgrade them with a variety of special upgrades. These can increase damage, alter the weapon's stats so that they are suited to your particular build and even unlock new attachments, such as unique ammo types, enchantments, and aesthetic options.
You'll need both the upgrade component and the weapon itself to upgrade it. The weapon should be at least an appropriate level to upgrade it. Most weapons only be upgraded by one upgrade.
There are weapon upgrade components scattered around the world and from enemies and can be purchased from vendors. Upgrade components are a mix of ingredients that you can incorporate into armors, weapons, trinkets and gathering tools in order to gain an attribute bonus. They require equipment to be of a certain level to allow the upgrade. They can be upgraded in the same manner as other items.
The upgrades themselves are a mix of Smithing Stones and Runes, and are used to improve the stats of a base weapon and enhancing its scale with other stats. These upgrades can be purchased from enemies in the open world or from merchants. They can also be obtained through combat.
Two NPCs can enhance your weapon: Blacksmith Hewg in the Roundtable Hold hub zone and the Smithing Master Iji located in the Road to Manor hub zone. Both of these NPCs will take your Smithing Stones and Runes in exchange for a more powerful version of the weapon and an enhancement.
Prioritize upgrading your most-used slot items first. Then upgrade the ones you won't replace soon. If you're playing an asymmetrical build, for instance, upgrade your weapon first, then your shoulders and chest, then your feet and hands. The same principle goes for Magic and Utility Items, with the caveat that some items may be better than others, based on your style of play. Armour is no different, with some Reforges being better than others.
Magic Items
A character can upgrade only one magic item at one time. If an upgrade project is canceled, no further upgrades will be offered for that item. Magic items that are upgraded will cost twice the gold they would normally cost to create or buy however they may offer additional benefits.

A magical item is an item that has special properties or effects. Most of these items are weapons, but some are also shields, armor and cloaks, potions, scrolls, rings and other objects. Some of these items have a sense of being.
The majority of magic items can be upgraded to be enhanced with new abilities. This can make them more useful to a player, or it could help them conquer a particularly challenging encounter. A weapon infused with an ingredient that is unique could offer, for instance, an extra level of damage to a particular enemy type. This is particularly useful for characters who have reached the point where they are likely to encounter a particular type of monster repeatedly in the dungeons.
A ring infused by magic could grant immunity to nonmagical attacks that bludgeon, pierce or slash (excluding silvered attacks) until the character takes another long rest. This is particularly beneficial for melee martial characters, or any character who wants to avoid the cost and hassle of purchasing shields.
Some enchanted objects have special abilities that allow the character to cast spells that are not in their class list. This is useful for those who are having trouble filling their spell slots because of multiclassing. These magical objects require an Intelligence check (Arcana) and the spell is determined by rolling a table that is based on the number of Intelligence point expended.
Other items that are enchanted can let the user change their appearance, or even create a completely new one. These items are especially beneficial for characters who are forced to leave their home or are in a place that they might not be accepted. An item that is magical can grant them an invisibility effect, or make them invisible to all except a chosen person.
Utility Items
Utility items are any equipment that isn't part of the categories of clothing or armor and come with a range of capabilities. Utility items are not compatible with each other, as opposed to weapons or armor. Most utility items provide an effect that the player can activate by using them however, some come with additional capabilities that are activated when the user presses the button or activates the ability.
The Flashlight is the most popular utilitarian item. item upgrades illuminates the surrounding area. Other items of utility include the Helicopter Hat and Rocket Boots, which allow the player to float in the air while moving and the Jetpack, which allows players to accelerate in any direction while on the ground. In the Engineering section you can quickly create a variety of useful items, while others are available only through Research projects or Experimental projects on the Proving Ground.
In addition to the items available in the standard inventory, players can also obtain some more useful items of utility by purchasing them from the Atomic Shop and also from seasonal Scoreboard rewards (such as the Shadow Goggles). Certain of these items can be upgraded for more effective use.
The majority of utility items boost the combat ability of a particular character or provide the player with some kind of advantage when it comes to navigation. Sharpening stones, made by a Weaponsmith, increase Power and Ferocity while Maintenance Oils, created by a Huntsman can increase concentration and healing power. Other items of utility like Writs and Theses crafted by the Scribe, can be used to give players an increase in damage or condition damage.
All XCOM soldiers can be equipped with a useful item at the beginning of the campaign, and an additional slot can be obtained through the use of certain types armor or completing engineering, research or experimental projects in the Proving Ground. During the Alien Hunters DLC, additional slots are added by equipping the Grenade Launcher which lets the player equip an Smoke Grenade or Bomb in another grenade slot. an offensive grenade is equipped in the main grenade slot.
